NRWB in fight against deforestation
Northern Region Water Board(NRWB) has sustained the war on deforestation, working with Malawi Defence Force and Mzuzu Government Secondary School to replant trees on Kaning’ina Hills.
On Saturday, soldiers from Moyale Barracks, the students and community dwellers braved incessant rains when they planted 5 000 trees in Lunyangwa Dam catchment area, Mzuzu City’s source of water.
The exercise was themed Arrest Deforestation, Plant Trees and Conserve Forests in line with the national tree planting season as government envisages planting no less than 60 million trees this year.
The initiative marks the beginning of a campaign in which the board plans to plant 15 million trees in the forest reserve by April.
Board member for NRWB, the Reverend Clifford Baloyi, warned against wanton tree cutting, asking Malawians to treat trees as friends and part of life.
Moyale Barracks commanding officer Stanley Saidi pledged to continue working with the board to protect and preserve the Kaning’ina Hills.
Nkhorongo Ward Councillor Kanzimu Gondwe said safeguarding the future of water supply in the country is the responsibility of every citizen.
